Most flooring comes from warehouse stock: fixed widths, random lengths within a set range. At an actual mill, “custom” means something specific: we cut to the width, length, grade, and cut you specify.

Why Length Matters

Standard hardwood flooring typically ships in random lengths, with plenty of shorter pieces mixed in. Every length change is a seam. Longer boards mean fewer seams, so the floor reads as calmer and more continuous. The tradeoff is that long, clear boards require larger, straighter trees and careful kiln drying, which is why they aren’t standard inventory.

Why Width Is a Structural Decision

Wider planks — we mill up to 10 inches — create the same “fewer interruptions” effect, but wider solid boards move more with humidity. That’s part of why rift & quartered (more stable) is often paired with wider widths.
